{"id":144,"date":"2019-02-01T06:00:48","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T06:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alansiu.net\/munkiguide\/?p=144"},"modified":"2025-08-08T02:02:59","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T02:02:59","slug":"munkipreferences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alansiu.net\/munkiguide\/munkipreferences\/","title":{"rendered":"Setting Munki preferences for your client machines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s true that you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/munki\/munki\/wiki\/Default-Repo-Detection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Default Repo Detection<\/a> to have your Munki clients connect to your Munki repo without having to actually adjust the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/munki\/munki\/wiki\/Preferences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Munki preferences<\/a> for all your clients, but what if you <em>do<\/em> want to set the Munki preferences? For example, instead of <em style=\"white-space:nowrap;\">https:\/\/munki.YOURSCHOOL.edu\/munki_repo<\/em>, maybe you want to use something else entirely, like <em style=\"white-space:nowrap;\">https:\/\/awesomesoftware.YOURSCHOOL.edu<\/em>, or even an IP address like <em style=\"white-space:nowrap;\">https:\/\/10.0.3.220\/repo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d recommend using <em>defaults write<\/em> commands to write the preferences to your own client, and then converting that into a .mobileconfig profile you can deploy to your clients.<\/p>\n<p>So on your own machine, for example, you can run commands like these (modify to suit your own needs):<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo defaults write \/Library\/Preferences\/ManagedInstalls SoftwareRepoURL \"https:\/\/<strong>ADDRESSFORYOURMUNKIREPO<\/strong>\"<\/code><\/p>\n<p><code><br \/>\nsudo defaults write \/Library\/Preferences\/ManagedInstalls PerformAuthRestarts -bool TRUE<\/code><\/p>\n<p>\nYou can set whatever <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/munki\/munki\/wiki\/Preferences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Munki preferences<\/a> you want.
